MoonCalendar

I made yet another mooncalendar. It’s my fourth one.

When I finished the graphite drawing ‘Traveller’, I knew I was going to use it as an illustration for this years mooncalendar. The subject was perfect for it. After scanning the drawing, I continued making the calendar in Photoshop.

This year i made the calendar bigger, size A3.

The previous years it was size A4 which was easy size to post. However last year I had people comment that the calendar could also be bigger. And as the smaller size was a challenge on how to fit everything in it and the calendar to remain readable, I decided to go for the bigger size this year.

With bigger size there was room for more art and also space for some text and extra info, like the only supermoon of the year. (Im proudest of that whole detail in 1st of august)

The full moons and new moons now have also the time of day below, because i got feedback from people who needed that information for their moon~practices. So i was happy to be able to incorporate those in the calendar as well.

I hope my mooncalendar serves both as a factual and visual calendar.

Every year i learn something new about our Moon.

The hypothesis is that Moon became from a debris caused by a collision between Earth and Mars sized planet Theia. Studies from the samples taken from the Moon suggest that much of what makes the Moon originates from Earth. I like how this theory fits with my image for the calendar, where the Earth goddess is holding the moon, like it’s part of her. Like she created the moon herself, for the purpose of creating the perfect conditions for life to emerge.

Maybe folks learned it at school already but I either missed or forgot about: how important moon is for the development of life on earth to beginwith.

Without moon, the day would be half as long, because moon is slowing our spinningaround the way down.

Without moon, Earths axis would be unstable, because the Moon is keeping it in place, tilted just perfectly. Wobbling in the axis would mean the climate would be all over the place. Winds would be stormier in such degree that i read somewhere that even if mammals would miraculously exist at all, they wouldn’t have ears because it would be impossible to hear anything with the wind blowing.

It sounds like life on Earth wouldn’t necessarily have evolved without the Moon. The ebb and flow of tides are connected to the whole life crawling out from the oceans to evolve. Without Moon the tides would be many times smaller, even if the Sun does make small tides as well.

The balanced environment the Moon provides for Earth, is in my opinion the only reason us humans are able to exist. As well as all of the diversity of life on earth. This beautiful miracle that is life on Earth.

The steady conditions of seasons and balanced climate are a major thing for life.

So it’s not just a dead rock circling us in the sky for aesthetics, it has a vital function and effects everything around here where we are. To me that’s mindblowing.

As is the fact that how little we think or wonder about these things.
